Indian marriages are famous for having a number of rituals. The beauty of an Indian wedding lies in the fact that there are numerous traditions associated with the special celebrations. Lots of laughter, music, and dance are just some of the elements that hold aloft the beauty of an Indian wedding.
Among the numerous traditions associated with these weddings, the mehndi ceremony is probably the most prominent. This is when the brides, and in some cases the grooms, apply mehndi on their hands and feet. While the groom needs to stay happy with a token design, the brides are given an elaborate treatment.
The significance of mehndi

According to popular belief, mehndi is a representation of the bond of matrimony existent between couples and is thus regarded as a sign of good luck. It signifies the love and affection prevalent between them and their immediate families. Some of the popular beliefs associated with a mehndi tradition are as follows:

  • The darkness of the color of the mehndi on the bride’s hands is a representation of the deep love existing between the would-be-couple.
  • The color of the mehndi also reflects the love and understanding the bride shares with her mother-in-law.
  • Longer the mehndi color stays on, more auspicious it proves to be for the newlyweds.
  • Mehndi is also looked upon as a symbolic representation of fertility.

How to make mehndi at home?
Henna, the main constituent for a mehndi paste, is usually sold in the form of a dry powder. It is usually prepared by drying, milling, and sifting the leaves of the henna plant. This powder needs to be blended with strong tea, lemon juice, or other liquids that have an acidic content so that the silky smooth consistency is obtained.

Henna paste should ideally be allowed to stand for twenty-four hours so that the dye is released. Essential oils that contain a high level of monoterpene alcohol such as eucalyptus, cajeput, lavender, and tea tree can be added to the henna paste so as to produce a dark color. This paste can now be applied to the palms and feet of the bride for creating intricate designs using cones.

In case you don’t wish to prepare cones at home, ready-made cones are readily available in the market.
Modernization of the mehndi designs
The traditional mehndi patterns have become intensely intricate and decorative over time. Today, there are a large number of mehndi patterns to choose from such as Arabic, Rajasthan and black mehndi designs. Besides, you have the choice of jazzing up a simple design using crystals, beads etc.

Dulha Dulhan and Shehnai designs are particularly popular amongst brides. But if you are a modern bride, you might just want to try out some awesome arm tattoos for your big day!

Applying a mehndi and getting a design right may sound very easy but is far from being so! You need a lot of effort and practice before you can get it right. It is thus advisable that you try out the design on rough to see if you have mastered it perfectly before you go ahead and apply it for the big occasion.
In case you find it too tedious to do the designs yourself, you can hire professional artists, or just follow one among the hundreds of tutorials available online, right at your fingertips.

Mehndi designs on feet
Doing a bridal mehndi pattern for the feet is not much different from any other conventional form of mehndi design. While we are used to seeing the hands and arms being covered by such designs it is not unusual to have mehndi art on one’s legs and feet. This design can be in coordination of what you have on your hands or have a totally different look and feel to it. Either way, dainty feet and delicate ankles brandishing traditional mehndi designs with a pair of toe rings and an anklet makes for a complete bridal look.
Over the course of the wedding celebrations, there will be numerous occasions when the bride will be called upon for exposing her feet and ankles. Having a great bridal mehndi pattern gracing her feet will help in bringing the whole look together and complement her ensemble of jewelry and makeup.
Before you get started

Here are some helpful tips to ensure that you are fully prepared before applying the bridal mehndi design on your hands. Trust me, following these tips will make life a whole lot easier for you.

  • Make sure you finalize the design way earlier, so as to avoid any last-minute confusion. If you are unsure of which design you want to adorn your hands with, you can just refer to designs available online in the form of images and videos.

  • You should ideally get the bridal mehndi done a couple of days before the wedding day since the henna will require around 48 uneventful hours to produce the darkest possible stain.
  • It is not a good idea to exfoliate before the mehndi is applied. More the number of skin layers, better will be the absorption of the henna.
  • All your manicure, pedicure, and waxing should be done before the mehndi is applied, as they impact the longevity and stain of the design. If your preference is for shaving over waxing, do so lightly in order to avoid razor burns or open wounds. Also, the harsh chemicals used in these manicures and pedicures can prevent the stain from developing so you won’t get the guarantee of a suitably bright bridal mehndi pattern.
  • Avoid the use of any lotions before applying the mehndi and for another couple of days after you have applied it so that it does not interfere with the stain.

After Application Care – How to Make Sure Your Mehndi Stays for Long

Once the mehndidries off, dab it with a solution of lemon juice and sugar which helps in increasing the intensity of the mehndi color. The dried henna will slowly fall off from the hand and leave behind an orange hue that slowly turns into reddish brown. The remainder of the dried paste can be scraped off from the hand using the blunt edge of a knife.
Chlorinated water and soap solutions should be avoided at all costs as they hinder the darkening of the mehndi color. After applying the mehndi, you can steam or warm your hands to give a darker color to the design. It is best to make the henna paste at home for creating mehndi designs and tattoos on your hands and feet. This way, you can keep yourself from harm of the harsh chemicals that are predominant in the readymade cones you get in the market.

Fashion Tip of the Day: You don’t have to be headed to class to rock a backpack.

In fact, style superstars and celebrities are opting for functional and fashionable backpacks instead of either overly bulky or too-small handbags. For every day outings, a chic backpack is the perfect errand partner to keep your belongings safe. Fuss-free and ready for anything the day holds, backpacks are quickly becoming one of the most coveted cool-girl accessories.

The key to finding the right backpack to fit your style is to ask yourself what vibe you’re aiming for. Are you looking for a posh appearance or a laid-back look? Different days call for different designs, so I went ahead and picked out my top three lusts for the season.

3 Chic Backpacks for Every Day| Cherry On Top Blog

1. Bohemian
Nothing says “day off” like a slouchy, patchwork sack. Ripe with the spirit of adventure, donning bright hues and eye-catching design, a boho bag will accompany you on your next day off from work with spirited style. The bohemian look is best suited for sun-soaked days, so leave this bag behind if you’re headed to a meeting.

2. Leather

Polished and perfect to wear from the mall to meeting up with friends, a structured leather backpack is just basic enough to match almost any outfit. Whether pleather or the real thing, “little leather backpacks” are sophisticated and chic. When your bag is small in size, it’s unassuming and seamlessly becomes one with your outfit.

3. Shaped
The freedom that comes with a hands-free bag makes room for lots of fun. Since you don’t have to worry about toting these bags on your shoulder – or worse, tucked underneath your arm – why not take advantage and find a fun shape for ultra personalization? This backpack looks like a diamond, which I love!
I found the above three bags while perusing Lyst’s site. And if you thought just one backpack was enough, think again: Their collection is described to have “backpacks to suit all moods and occasions,” so it’s time to start envisioning your hands-free, fashionable future, because there’s never a bad time to wear a backpack.

Bollywood’s Sri Lankan beauty hardly fails to make a style statement and sets hearts aflutter every time she steps out. Be it award shows, promotional events, casual outings, weddings or vacations, there’s something to learn from her every time and upgrade our look. Not to mention, add new and versatile pieces to our wardrobe also. She manages to turn on heads each time and has hardly let stylists down. The gorgeous actress has come a long way from what her style used to be previously. Start jotting down notes as you find out about the important lessons each one of us can learn from:

1) Neon can look subtle

So you love clothes in neon shades but you also don’t wear them since they intimidate you. You don’t have to inject a big dose of neon in your outfit. Go for a pop of neon in a subtle manner just like Jacqueline does. She has teamed up her monochromatic outfit beautifully with a neon pink jacket. Her clean makeup further elevates her look.

2) Layer jewellery sensibly

There are some jewellery rules which work like a charm and make statement pieces work beautifully. If you want to layer different jewellery pieces, do it on one area. If you are stacking bracelets on your hands, keep the jewellery pieces for your neck and ear simple and sleek. Otherwise you run the risk of looking like a decked Christmas tree. Similarly if you are going for a statement neckpiece, don’t make your look overwhelming by going for statement earrings.

3) Sporty Look Isn’t Just For Playground

Because whoever said sporty and glamorous look can’t come together clearly had no idea about what style means. One can always count on Jacqueline to make even simple sporty dresses look glam. So the next time you need inspiration for styling your sporty dress or ways on how to wear baseball cap with a dress, you know who to turn to. Now you know how to style them, add more pieces to your wardrobe by shopping from India’s mega online Fashion store at non-bank breaking prices with the help of Jabong coupons available on CashKaro.com.

4) Kurta and pants doesn’t has to be boring

Jacqueline looks every bit ethereal here! The way in which she has rocked this outfit is beyond words. She isn’t decked in jewellery and makes for a real cool inspiration for women who despise kurta and pants thinking they might just look the same like everyone else. You can shop for a lot of trendy kurta and pants online at prices which won’t hurt your pocket by using Fashion And You coupons via CashKaro.com.

5) Mix and match with stripes

Stripes have made a big comeback this season and can be seen just all over. One of the best ways to hide and highlight different body parts is by creating illusions through different kinds of stripes. Go for vertical stripes for the areas where you want to create a slimming effect. Diagonal ones work great too. Opt for horizontal stripes for the parts wherein you want to create extra weight. She has completed her look here with a statement neck piece which adds color to her otherwise monochrome outfit. In her second look, she has opted for a very casual look by pairing her striped tee with distressed jeans.

These are just a few of the amazing looks she sports every time and wows everyone! She is a style inspiration especially for women with curves and do not know how to dress up and flaunt them.

Hello all, welcome to the fourth day of the Fall Party. Today, I decided to write about an outfit that I found has become my favourite this season. Let me show you-

Indian Fall/Autumn is not at all cold, in fact it is really hot here in India right now. To keep it all casual and breezy, I chose to wear a basic white tee with a pair of red printed trousers. The trousers are very comfy and at the same time, stylish.

I accessorized the whole outfit with a chunky golden neck piece, bought from Flipkart.

My flats are from Osca Donna, a comparatively new brand that provides hand made, designer shoes. These are the comfiest shoes I have ever worn in my life. The leather is not those hard ones that end up causing blisters to your feet. I found this brand on Flipkart.

My black sling back is my new BFF for quite sometime now. I prefer slings and satchels to handbags.

Ethnic and Off-beat| OOTD| Fashion| Cherry On Top Blog

Hello all, how are you doing? I can’t believe September is about to bid goodbye and October is not too far away. I can’t suppress my excitement as Durga Puja starts on October 19th!! Gosh, one more year passed! Anyways, today’s post is going to be an OOTD post. A few weeks ago, we spontaneously planned for a day-out with our friends. This was an impromptu OOTD so excuse me for the quality of photos. I brought the usual point and shoot camera with me. The background and lighting aren’t as good as they should have been as the trip was not meant for photography. Anyhoo, I succeeded in choosing some good quality pictures for this post as I eagerly wanted to share the outfit with you guys.

So, without further ado, let’s jump into the post.

You guys might know that I am not an ‘ethnics’ person. I feel extremely comfortable in my jeans or chinos and oversized blouses. I rarely choose to wear ethnic outfits only if there is any traditional function or wedding. This is the reason I merely have 4-5 traditional outfits. If I ever choose to wear an ethnic attire, I make sure that it is not heavy, bland and most importantly conventional.

The Kurti that I am wearing is my favourite at this moment because it is very  lightweight, it has 3/4 sleeves and it has a high-low cut which is just what I need in my ethnics- cool, classy, casual! The material is Poly Crepe which is not breathable yet comfortable.

I wore these white and gold sandals which I think complemented the ‘ethnic-ness‘ of the outfit.

I didn’t accessorized much as it was very hot and humid and of course I had no plans of clicking for the blog. I wore a pair of beautiful golden earrings from Gotta Go Gorgeous.

My sling bag is from Caprese. I love the faux leather material. The black and gold combo gives it a oomph. I love slings bags so much and this one is my current favourite!

Hi guys, I hope you all are doing great. Today, first time in the history of my blog ,Cherry On Top, there will be a OOTD post. I am really very excited to present my first ever OOTD to you guys. I always wanted to do a fashion related post, especially an OOTD but I never could summon up the courage to do so. No, as it is finally happening, I am very, very thrilled. I hope you like it.
If you are following me on Instagram, you would know that I had posted a picture of a box full of Crochita accessories.

Follow me at instagram.com/saayantinee

Today, in this OOTD, I have used two things from that lot- a golden metal choker necklace and a metal headband. I really love them a lot for they are golden and they can jazz up an outfit, especially a monochrome one immediately.

Black and Gold is the match made in heaven. They complement each other like no other duos do. The combination of black and gold is timeless, eternal. Black is one of my favourite colours and gold (read golden metal) is my current obsession. This post is the upshot of that.

I went for a very minimal makeup- just the Lakme CC Cream, a touch of compact and a hint of red lipstick (Maybelline Bold Matte MAT5) just to focus on the stunning necklace. Yes, now that the post is up, I realize I could have smiled more 😛

Hello all! hope you all have enjoyed Diwali a lot. Today I am going to show you what I recently bought. This haul is a fashion haul and comprises of clothes and fashion accessories. I think this is my first ever fashion haul in the blog. Anyways, let’s jump into the post-
There was a sale on Jabong recently. Being a deal-hunter, I grabbed the opportunity to fill up my wardrobe a little bit as I always run out of good clothes right at the crucial moment. I bought two tops from People. Let’s check out-

The first one, as you can see, has a pastel green shade in the front and brown at the back. The top fits me very well. It doesn’t cling to your body at all. It’s very comfy and lets your body breath.  I am really into loose-fits and comfy clothes these days. The front of this top is Viscose Spandex and the backside is Linen. The second top is again a loose-fit, comfy top. I don’t actually remember the material but it is very light-weight and comfortable. Doesn’t irritate the skin and lets it breath. It is loose-fit but ingeniously highlights the curves of your body.

These two tops are again from Jabong. It has been ages since I bought them. I thought of showing them to you now. These are from Harpa and made up of the same material, that is Viscose. Both of them almost looks the same, they have these net detailing at the neck area which give them the oomph and breaks the monotony of the solid colours. I loved both of them so much that I bought them. Call me insane, but that’s me! 😛

These two tops I bought from the OASAP credit that I won long ago in Preethi’s giveaway. The bracelet you’ll see afterwards are from OASAP as well. I found the watermelon-prints very cute so I had to get it. Though it looks very short in length, but at the same time it is decently long. The heart-printed top is cute also, but I found it a little over-sized though I clearly remember I had ordered a size S L

This trouser is from Myntra when there was a festive sale going on. It’s from D-Muse and originally priced at 999/- but I got it in a 30% off discount. Happy J I love the zip detailing at the end. This is the moment when I wish I were a little taller. Sad L

These two are my current favourite possession right now. The bracelet is, as told before, from OASAP and the ear-cuff is by Crunchy Fasion, bought from Fashionara.com. I have bragged about it a couple of times on Facebook and Instagram (follow me if you don’t :P). I am currently into ear-cuffs and planning to buy a number of them J

So, that’s all for my recent fashion purchases. Stay tuned to my Facebook and Instagram to know more about my upcoming hauls. Till then, keep smiling and stay beautiful J
